Reflections on the visit by Annabelle
These are reflections by the Pencils for Africa Editorial Team after
the visit from Annabelle, Co-Founder of School for Life Foundation
Nicolas, Editor-in-Chief
On October 23rd, 2014, Annabelle Chauncy, came to our Pencils for Africa meeting to inform us about a program that she is currently involved in: School for Life. The mission of the program is:
We would like to “break the cycle of poverty by building sustainable, productive and profitable communities beginning with quality education.”
They provide healthcare, education, and farming jobs for poor communities in Uganda. Annabelle and School for Life truly believe that education is the first step to solving poverty in Africa.
Annabelle and co-founder David Everett wanted to make a change in a struggling community that needed a school and help with sustainable food sources. They wanted to help make a change for the better.
As Nelson Mandela once said:
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
I believe that Nelson Mandela’s words are expressed through Annabelle’s program. School for Life can really make a difference in these communities and I have no doubt that it will.

I was really inspired by Annabelle’s visit.
Annabelle and her team help to educate the village on health and sustainable agriculture to help them succeed later in life and give them opportunities that they wouldn’t otherwise have.
Annabelle and her co-founder, David, have really improved the quality of life in the village by providing clean water and food.
Her story showed me the importance of things that we take for granted, like education, food, and water.

Annabelle taught me so much about Africa and what is needed to run a school there. It is inspiring to me that after going to Africa when she was 21, she had a goal to go back and build a school.
She also taught me that you can start with something small and expand it year by year. I feel she taught me this because she started with just one grade, and now has many more. It was interesting to hear that only African teachers teach at the school. I think this would make the school have more of a sense of community. I think it is also great that they have a well and a garden for the whole community to share.
Overall, School for Life is a great inspiration to me.

Annabelle’s program in Uganda is very inspiring.
I feel fortunate to have met her and feel grateful that she was interested in coming to St. Hilary School to speak to the PFA team. What inspired me the most was that Annabelle came from Australia and she was able to go to Africa and influence people there with her ideas for change.
I also liked that the people in Uganda where open to change and trusted Annabelle and David to help make their community a better place to live.
Annabelle inspires me to want to help others who are less fortunate then I am.

Annabelle is honest, hardworking, and someone that I look up to.
I loved how she kept on finishing her goals even if it took hard work.
Annabelle has so much success that it is almost like it never stops!
Another thing that inspired me was the pictures of the kids and how much the community helped the children to keep them going.
I hope that someday I can be someone like Annabelle.
